2 Chronicles 26 recounts the reign of King #Uzziah (also known as #Azariah), who became king of Judah at the young age of sixteen. His reign lasted for fifty-two years, and he is noted for doing what was right in the eyes of the Lord, following the example of his father, #Amaziah. Uzziah's early success is attributed to his seeking of God during the days of the prophet #Zechariah, which led to his prosperity and military victories against the Philistines and other enemies. The chapter emphasizes how Uzziah built up Judah's defenses, fortified cities, and developed a strong army, showcasing his leadership and the blessings of God upon him as long as he remained faithful.
However, as Uzziah grew powerful, his heart became proud, leading to his downfall. He entered the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar, an act reserved for the priests, which demonstrated his overstepping of divine boundaries. The high priest #Azariah and eighty other courageous priests confronted him, warning him that he was acting against God's commandments. Uzziah, filled with rage, refused to listen and was struck with leprosy as a divine judgment. This affliction forced him to live in isolation, and he was unable to rule, leaving his son #Jotham to govern in his stead.
