The Israelites were divided into two kingdoms: Israel in the north and Judah in the south. The worship of Yahweh was often mixed with idolatrous practices, influenced by surrounding nations.
The Kingdom of Israel was under the rule of King Joram (Jehoram), while Judah was ruled by King Jehoshaphat. Moab, under King Mesha, was a vassal state to Israel but rebelled after the death of King Ahab.
The events occur in the region of Moab, east of the Dead Sea, and involve a campaign through the wilderness of Edom.
Vassalage was common, where weaker states paid tribute to stronger ones. Rebellion against a suzerain was a significant political move, often leading to military conflict.
