Liturgical Usage — Exodus 1

Liturgical Usage

  1. Responsive Reading / Litany (Oppression and Hope)

A congregation and leader alternate lines (leader reads the account of oppression; people respond with verses of trust and thanksgiving). Used in services remembering suffering, in prayer meetings for persecuted peoples, or as a preparatory reading leading into preaching on God's deliverance.

Thematic focusOppression, Cry for Help, Divine Favor and Multiplication.

    Connections to tradition

Connects with the biblical theme of Israel's bondage and God's later deliverance (see Exodus 3:7–8; Exodus 12). This responsive reading can be placed in worship contexts that recall God's saving acts (cf. Exodus 12 for Passover imagery and 1 Corinthians 5:7 for Christ as our Passover).

    Key verses
    • Exodus 1:11-14
    • Exodus 1:12
    • Exodus 1:20-21
  2. Prayer of Commission / Blessing for Caregivers (Midwives and Healthcare Workers)

A commissioning prayer for midwives, nurses, doctors, birthworkers, and all who protect life and conscience. Read at ordination/commissioning services or for a dedicated time of intercession for those who must choose obedience to God over unjust orders.

Thematic focusCourage of Conscience, Fear of God, Divine Reward for Righteous Obedience.

    Connections to tradition

Rooted in the biblical example of Shiphrah and Puah who feared God and risked disobedience to a tyrant (Exodus 1:15–21). Connects scripturally with the New Testament principle of obeying God rather than men (Acts 5:29) and can be used in commissioning rites that call workers to faithful service under God's authority.

    Key verses
    • Exodus 1:15-21
    • Exodus 1:20-21
  3. Intercessory Prayer / Lament for the Vulnerable

An intercessory litany used in services to pray for the protection of children, the oppressed, and those threatened by violent powers. Can be used in times of public mourning, at services for the protection of the vulnerable, or incorporated into prayers for justice and life-care ministries.

Thematic focusProtection of the Vulnerable, Lament against Injustice, Petition for Divine Intervention.

    Connections to tradition

Draws on the biblical witness of Pharaoh's decree to destroy male infants (Exodus 1:22) and the righteous resistance of the midwives (Exodus 1:16–17). Fits within the wider biblical call to care for the vulnerable (cf. James 1:27) and may be integrated into intercessions offered during liturgies that emphasize justice and mercy.

    Key verses
    • Exodus 1:22
    • Exodus 1:16-17
  4. Hymn or Thanksgiving Text (God's Faithful Increase)

Thematic focusBlessing, Fruitfulness, Divine Favor in Adversity.

    Connections to tradition

Echoes the recurrent biblical theme of God blessing and multiplying his people (see Genesis blessing motifs; Exodus 12 as the deliverance milestone). Can be used in congregational singing that recalls God's providential care and multiplying blessing.
