Overview
Genesis Chapter 41 narrates a pivotal moment in the life of #Joseph, who is now in Egypt after being sold into slavery by his brothers. The chapter begins with Pharaoh having two troubling dreams that none of his wise men can interpret. In his dreams, Pharaoh sees seven healthy cows being devoured by seven gaunt cows, and seven healthy ears of grain swallowed by seven thin ears. Distressed by these dreams, Pharaoh seeks an interpretation, which leads to the remembrance of Joseph by the chief cupbearer, who had been imprisoned with him and had experienced Joseph's gift of dream interpretation.
Joseph is summoned from prison, and he attributes his ability to interpret dreams to God. He explains to Pharaoh that the dreams signify seven years of abundance in Egypt followed by seven years of severe famine. Joseph advises Pharaoh to appoint a wise and discerning man to oversee the collection of grain during the years of plenty to prepare for the coming famine. Impressed by Joseph's wisdom, Pharaoh appoints him as second-in-command over all of Egypt, giving him authority to implement this plan. This chapter highlights God's sovereignty and providence, as He uses Joseph's trials to position him for a significant role in saving many lives during the famine, fulfilling the earlier dreams Joseph had about his future and the eventual reconciliation with his family.
