1st Century AD
The early Christian community was transitioning from Jewish traditions to a new covenant understanding through Christ. The Jewish temple practices were still in place, and the audience was familiar with the rituals and sacrifices of the Old Covenant.
The Roman Empire was the dominant political force, and Judea was under Roman occupation. The Jewish religious leaders held significant influence over the Jewish population.
The letter to the Hebrews is generally thought to be addressed to Jewish Christians, possibly in Jerusalem or another major center of Jewish life in the Roman Empire.
The Jewish sacrificial system was central to religious life, with the temple in Jerusalem being the focal point of worship and atonement. The concept of blood sacrifice for the remission of sins was well understood.
High Priest
The High Priest in the Jewish tradition was responsible for entering the Holy of Holies once a year on the Day of Atonement to offer sacrifices for the sins of the people.
