Overview
John Chapter 11 presents one of the most profound miracles of Jesus, the raising of Lazarus from the dead. The chapter begins with the news of Lazarus' illness, a beloved friend of Jesus, and his sisters, #Mary and #Martha. Despite the urgency of the situation, Jesus intentionally delays his visit, stating that this illness will not end in death but is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it. This sets the stage for a powerful demonstration of Jesus' authority over life and death, reinforcing his identity as the #SonOfGod.
When Jesus finally arrives in Bethany, he finds that Lazarus has been dead for four days. Martha expresses her faith in Jesus, declaring that if he had been there, her brother would not have died. Jesus responds with a profound statement, saying, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me will live, even though he dies" (John 11:25). This declaration emphasizes the hope and eternal life found in Christ.
Jesus then goes to the tomb, where he weeps, showing his deep compassion and love for Lazarus and his sisters. He commands the stone to be rolled away and calls Lazarus out of the tomb, demonstrating his power over death. Lazarus emerges, alive, which not only brings joy to the family but also serves as a pivotal moment that leads many to believe in Jesus. However, it also incites the religious leaders to plot against him, highlighting the growing tension that will ultimately lead to the crucifixion.
