John Chapter 5 presents a powerful account of Jesus' healing of a man who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years at the Pool of Bethesda. This pool was believed to have healing properties, and many sick people gathered there, waiting for the waters to be stirred. Jesus, seeing the man lying there, asks him if he wants to be healed. The man explains his situation, indicating that he has no one to help him into the pool when the water is stirred. Jesus then commands him to 'Get up, take up your bed, and walk.' Immediately, the man is healed, demonstrating Jesus' authority over sickness and his ability to perform miracles. This act of healing on the Sabbath, however, leads to controversy with the Jewish leaders, who accuse Jesus of breaking the Sabbath law, highlighting the tension between Jesus and the religious authorities of the time.
The chapter continues with Jesus' defense of his actions, emphasizing his divine authority as the Son of God. He explains that his work is in perfect harmony with the work of the Father, stating, 'My Father is working until now, and I am working.' This declaration not only affirms his identity but also escalates the conflict with the Jewish leaders, who seek to kill him for claiming equality with God. Jesus further elaborates on the relationship between the Father and the Son, explaining that the Son can do nothing of his own accord but only what he sees the Father doing. This chapter ultimately reveals the profound truth of Jesus' divine nature and his mission to bring life to those who believe in him, as he states, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life.'
