Overview
Numbers Chapter 20 recounts a pivotal moment in the journey of the Israelites as they wander in the wilderness. The chapter begins with the death of #Miriam, Moses' sister, in the wilderness of Zin, which marks a significant loss for the community. Following her death, the people gather at #Kadesh, but they quickly face a crisis due to a lack of water. The Israelites, in their distress, complain against Moses and Aaron, expressing their longing for the comforts of Egypt and questioning why they were brought into the wilderness to die. This reflects a recurring theme of doubt and rebellion among the people, despite the many miracles they had witnessed (Exodus 16:3, Exodus 17:2-3).
In response to the people's complaints, God instructs Moses to take his staff and speak to a rock to bring forth water. However, in a moment of frustration, Moses strikes the rock twice instead of speaking to it, which leads to a serious consequence. God tells Moses that because he did not trust Him enough to honor Him as holy in the sight of the Israelites, he will not lead the people into the Promised Land (Deuteronomy 32:51-52). This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of obedience and faithfulness to God's commands. The chapter concludes with the Israelites' journey toward #Edom, where they seek passage through the land, but are met with refusal from the king of Edom, highlighting the ongoing challenges they face as they move toward their promised inheritance.
