Numbers Chapter 22 recounts the story of Balaam, a non-Israelite prophet, who is summoned by King Balak of Moab to curse the Israelites as they approach the Promised Land. Balak fears the growing number of Israelites and believes that cursing them will weaken their power. He sends messengers to Balaam, offering him a reward for his services. However, God intervenes and instructs Balaam not to go with them or curse the Israelites, as they are blessed. This highlights God's protective hand over His people, fulfilling His promise to Abraham that those who bless Israel will be blessed, and those who curse them will be cursed (Genesis12:3).
Despite God's warning, Balaam is enticed by the prospect of riches and seeks permission to go with Balak's messengers. God allows him to go but sends an angel to block his path. Balaam's donkey sees the angel and stops, leading to a miraculous moment where God opens the donkey's mouth, allowing it to speak to Balaam. This incident serves as a powerful reminder of God's sovereignty and the importance of obedience to His will. Ultimately, when Balaam meets Balak, he can only bless Israel, declaring that they are a people set apart and favored by God. This chapter emphasizes the futility of opposing God's plans and the assurance that His blessings cannot be undone by human schemes.
