Numbers Chapter 23 presents a pivotal moment in the narrative of the Israelites as they journey toward the Promised Land. In this chapter, we find #Balaam, a non-Israelite prophet, summoned by #Balak, the king of Moab, to curse the Israelites. Balak fears the growing strength of the Israelites and believes that a curse from Balaam could weaken them. However, Balaam, after seeking the Lord, declares that he can only speak what God tells him. This emphasizes the sovereignty of God over the nations and His protective hand over Israel, as Balaam is compelled to bless rather than curse God’s chosen people. The chapter highlights the theme of divine authority and the futility of opposing God’s will, as Balaam repeatedly affirms that he cannot go beyond the command of the Lord (Numbers 23:8, 23:20).
As Balaam prepares to deliver his oracles, he sets up altars and offers sacrifices, seeking to invoke a curse. However, each time he opens his mouth, blessings flow instead. His first oracle declares that Israel is a people set apart, and God does not see iniquity in Jacob (Numbers 23:21). Balaam’s second oracle further emphasizes that God is not a man that He should lie or change His mind (Numbers 23:19), reinforcing the reliability of God’s promises.
