Ruth Chapter 2 continues the beautiful story of Ruth, a Moabite widow who has chosen to stay with her mother-in-law, Naomi, after the death of their husbands. This chapter introduces us to #Boaz, a wealthy relative of Naomi's late husband, who becomes a key figure in Ruth's journey. Ruth, demonstrating her strong work ethic and commitment to providing for Naomi, goes to glean in the fields, a practice allowed by the Law of Moses (Leviticus 19:9-10) where the poor could collect leftover grain. This act of humility and diligence not only shows Ruth's character but also sets the stage for God's providential care in their lives.
As Ruth gleans, she happens to work in the field of #Boaz. When Boaz arrives, he notices Ruth and inquires about her. His foreman informs him of Ruth's loyalty to Naomi and her hard work. Boaz is impressed by Ruth's dedication and kindness, and he approaches her with words of encouragement and protection. He instructs his workers to allow her to glean freely and even to drop extra grain for her to collect. This act of generosity reflects Boaz's character and foreshadows his role as a redeemer.
The chapter concludes with Ruth returning to Naomi with an abundance of grain and recounting her encounter with Boaz. Naomi recognizes Boaz as a kinsman-redeemer and expresses hope for their future, highlighting the theme of redemption that runs throughout the book.
