The author and speaker of Ecclesiastes, traditionally identified as Solomon.
In this chapter, the Preacher reflects on the oppression and toil in the world, the value of companionship, and the vanity of political power. He observes the suffering of the oppressed and the lack of comfort for them, the futility of labor driven by envy, and the benefits of having a companion. He also comments on the transient nature of political popularity.
