The Table of Nations
Genesis 10 provides a genealogical record of the descendants of Noah's three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. This chapter is often referred to as the 'Table of Nations' because it outlines the origins of the various nations that spread across the earth after the flood.
The Table of Nations demonstrates God's sovereignty over the nations and His plan for humanity to fill the earth. It also sets the stage for the division of languages and peoples, which is further explained in Genesis 11 with the Tower of Babel. This chapter underscores the unity of humanity under God, despite the diversity of nations.
This genealogical record connects the post-flood world to the broader narrative of God's redemptive plan. It shows the fulfillment of God's command to 'be fruitful and multiply' (Genesis 9:1) and sets the stage for the calling of Abraham, through whom God will bless all nations (Genesis 12:1-3).
