Judah and Tamar
Judah, one of Jacob's sons, leaves his brothers and marries a Canaanite woman. He has three sons: Er, Onan, and Shelah. Er marries Tamar but is struck down by God for his wickedness. Judah instructs Onan to fulfill his duty as a brother-in-law to Tamar, but Onan also acts wickedly and is struck down. Judah promises Tamar that she will marry Shelah when he grows up, but he does not fulfill this promise. Tamar disguises herself as a prostitute and conceives twins, Perez and Zerah, by Judah.
This chapter highlights themes of justice, deception, and God's sovereignty. Despite human sinfulness and deception, God's purposes prevail.
