Overview
Judges Chapter 2 begins with the angel of the Lord coming up from Gilgal to Bochim, delivering a message of rebuke to the Israelites. The angel reminds them of God's faithfulness in bringing them out of Egypt and giving them the land He promised to their ancestors. However, the Israelites have failed to obey God's commands and have made covenants with the inhabitants of the land, which leads to their downfall. This sets the stage for the cycle of sin, oppression, repentance, and deliverance that characterizes the Book of Judges. The chapter emphasizes the importance of faithfulness to God's covenant and the consequences of disobedience, as seen in the phrase, "You have not obeyed my voice; why have you done this?" (Judges2:2).
The chapter also highlights the death of Joshua and the subsequent generation that arose after him, who did not know the Lord or the works He had done for Israel. This lack of knowledge leads to a decline in faithfulness, as the Israelites begin to worship the Baals and other foreign gods. The anger of the Lord is kindled against Israel, and He allows them to be oppressed by their enemies. Yet, in His mercy, God raises up judges to deliver them from their distress whenever they cry out to Him. This chapter serves as a poignant reminder of the need for each generation to know and remember the works of the Lord, ensuring that they remain faithful to His commands and avoid the pitfalls of idolatry and disobedience.
