The early Christian community was emerging from Judaism, grappling with the transition from the Old Covenant, centered on the Law of Moses, to the New Covenant established through Jesus Christ.
The Roman Empire was the dominant political force, and Judaism was a recognized religion within the empire. Christianity, however, was beginning to face persecution as it distinguished itself from Judaism.

The Jewish sacrificial system, with its emphasis on repeated animal sacrifices, was deeply ingrained in the religious life of the people. The concept of a once-for-all sacrifice through Jesus was revolutionary.
